B Corp month 2024

March is B Corp Month, an annual celebration of more than 8,000 B Corp certified businesses around the world, sharing how they are working to build a more responsible and sustainable economy.

To mark the month, we got together with representatives from twelve Kent based B Corps to plant 150 trees and kick off a programme of local celebrations. It felt like a practical, human way to begin the month, rooted in place.

Spring was in the air on Monday 4 March as we gathered at Wildwood Trust in Herne. Wildwood is a Kent charity working with nature to fight the biodiversity crisis, halt the extinction of native species and create resilient habitats where nature can thrive.

The event was organised in partnership with both Wildwood and Kent County Council’s Kent Plan Tree team, which is a county wide initiative established in 2022, with the ambition to plant 1.5 million new trees and increase canopy cover to nineteen percent across Kent.

We all remember learning that trees create oxygen and store carbon, but their value goes a lot further as they stabilise and nourish soil, cool the air through shade and provide shelter and food for wildlife.

Finding the right locations to plant new trees is central to the strategy, but within Wildwood’s boundaries sits an area of former woodland, cleared illegally many decades ago and only recently brought back into the Trust’s care. This made it an ideal place to begin restoring what was lost.

Armed with spades and a short demonstration on pit planting, we spent the morning planting English Oak, Rowan, Bird Cherry, Hazel and Field Maple trees, all supplied by a local nursery.

After a hearty lunch of soup and bread rolls, we were treated to a tour of the park and a deeper look at Wildwood’s wider mission.

Their work spans conservation and rewilding projects across Kent and the UK, from the return of the European beaver as part of a fenland restoration project, to the successful release of red billed chough in Dover for the first time in more than 200 years.

Wildwood's mission

Towards the east of the park sits the Wilder Blean project, a partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust that has introduced European bison to ancient woodland for the first time in the UK.

The aim is to restore six hundred hectares of woodland and create resilient new habitats through natural processes. Although we did not spot the herd from the viewing platform, we did see two new bison that had recently arrived at Wildwood.

What is a B Corp?

There are now over 1,500 B Corp certified businesses across the UK, each having gone through a rigorous assessment to verify that people, communities and the planet sit at the heart of how they operate.

Digitom achieved B Corp certification in June 2023 with a score of 96.5, which we see as a line in the sand as certification marks the start of an ongoing journey to learn, improve and contribute to positive change.

Days like this matter to us as they reflect how we approach our work too. Collaborating with like-minded purpose-driven organisations, whether we’re creating communications, recruitment or learning and development films, our focus is on clarity, empathy, long term impact, and thoughtful action that stands up to scrutiny.
