Maidstone Borough Council

The Caddy Family

Maidstone Borough Council is the local government authority responsible for delivery of a wide range of public services for Kent’s county town.

Achievements

The brief

With a commitment to reducing waste, increasing recycling rates and improving sustainability across the borough, Maidstone Borough Council briefed us to help primary school children understand its new food waste collection service.

The council needed an engaging learning and development communication that would explain food waste recycling in a clear, age-appropriate way and encourage pupils in Maidstone, Kent to build practical recycling habits at home.

Our approach

We built the communication around The Caddy Family, characters created by the council’s Communications Team, and developed a simple story led by Anna Applecore to make food waste recycling clear, local and engaging for pupils.

Working with an Educational Specialist, we shaped the language, pace and structure to create an age-appropriate learning and development resource that supported classroom discussion and behaviour change at home.

We then recorded the voices with a professional cast at Maidstone Studios in Vinters Park, creating an educational film that supported the council’s wider school engagement across the borough.

What the client said

“We were able to grow our food characters and give them personalities, resulting in a series of fun and educational videos we can use on all our communication channels.”

The outcome

The council received a children’s educational animation for online use and school workshops, supporting food waste recycling across Maidstone and Kent.

The film gave teachers and workshop leaders a consistent learning and development resource that helped pupils talk confidently about food waste recycling and encouraged practical action at home.

The campaign’s effectiveness was recognised by the industry, earning Finalist status at the LARAC Awards for Best Waste Minimisation Project, validating the impact of the communication.
